More About VNA2007 Flu Clinics |
|
The Visiting Nurse Association of Central New York, Inc. is proud to announce that we have partnered with the Onondaga County Health Department and Maxim Health Care Systems for the 2007 public flu and pneumonia clinics. This collaborative effort among all three agencies is designed to deliver the flu vaccine to the community in a safe, timely and well-organized manner.
Both adult and family clinics will be offered beginning Tuesday, October 23 through Wednesday, November 21, 2007. Adult clinics are for those 18 years and older. Family clinics accept children 6 months and older at times listed. All children 6 months to 9 years who have never received a flu shot before will be required to receive a booster shot one month following the first shot. This will be given at 301 Slocum Avenue in Syracuse.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Recommendations
For the 2007 flu season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has highlighted the following groups as high-risk for flu complications. People at high risk for complications from the flu should get a flu shot every year. This includes:
- All children 6 months to 5 years of age*
- People 65 years of age and older
- Residents of long-term care facilities
- People with medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and lung disease, kidney problems, cancer or blood disorders
- People with certain neuromuscular disorders (such as stroke, seizure disorder) that increase the risk of aspiration
- People with a weakened immune system
- People 6 months to 18 years of age on long-term aspirin treatment
- Women who will be pregnant during flu season (November – April)
* All children 6 months to 5 years of age and their caregivers are encouraged to receive a flu shot each year. Children within this age group have a higher chance of being hospitalized due to flu complications. To accommodate this recommendation, five clinics have been scheduled to provide flu shots for children. Children under the age of nine who get a flu shot for the first time, will need two doses of vaccine. Therefore, starting the two-step process in October is encouraged so that both shots are given before the start of flu season.
Persons who have contact with high-risk groups should also receive a flu shot including:
- Health care providers (employees at hospitals, long-term care facilities and home care providers)
- Out-of-home caregivers and all household contacts of children under 0-59 months of age
In addition, it is recommended that anyone who does not fit into these categories, yet would like to protect themselves from getting the flu, get a flu shot.
